What they said
Dear Ms. Harmon,
I still remember stepping into Debate class my freshman year. I was terrified. I had no idea what to expect or how I would fit in. You, Ms. Harmon, have been the catalyst for who I have become. Without your guidance and encouragement, I would not be standing here today, confident in my abilities and clear with my goals.
I tried to drop the class my freshman year, but the moment I did, you looked at me squarely in the eye and said, "You are not leaving Debate." In that instant, I accepted my place on the team. I thought I would freeze and mess up at tournaments, but I did good. Three years later, and I haven't missed a season, staying in Debate convinced me that I could pursue law and fueled a deeper passion for public policy and politics. Learning how to research, construct arguments, and think on my feet gave me skills I use everyday. I will always cherish the way you coached me up, challenged me to improve, and believed in my potential even when I doubted myself.
Debate became more than just an activity, it became a second family. You were always there as a mentor and coach. I never expected to have such honest conversations about life, purpose, and responsibility. Your straightforward style - telling me what I needed to hear - instead of what I wanted to hear, helped me grow faster than I ever could have possibly imagined. From small life lessons to the talks about responsibility, you guided me in more than just speech drills.
I will always remember the team trips, the late nights coming home from debate, and the laughter we shared as well.
You made me feel seen and supported during times when I was unsure of myself. You have me space to make mistakes and the tools to learn from them.
If I could relive high school, I would never ever choose to do that s*** again, but I would look back and enjoy the memories. The confidence I gained, the friendships I built, and the personal growth I experienced all come from the help you provided. You showed me how to channel my inner voice, trust my research, and speak with conviction. Those lessons shaped who I am today and will continue to guide me through future challenges.
There are very few people who have left such a lasting mark on me. If I assembled a hall of fame of people who I cherished the most in life, you would be in it without a doubt. Your raised me up, taught me to spread my wings and encouraged me to fly on my own.
Thank you Ms. Harmon for being an amazing teacher, coach, mentor, and now friend. You have genuinely made my life richer and fuller, and for that, I appreciate you with all my heart.
Sincerely,
Adrian Escobedo
